Lesson Learned:  Jesus gives us joy.

Materials Needed:  old cereal box, string or ribbon, paint, pencil, scissors, hole punch

Bible Verse:
Luke 2:10
10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

John 16:23-24
23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.

Psalm 21:6

Surely you have granted him unending blessings
and made him glad with the joy of your presence.

Talking Points:  When Jesus was born, people were very excited because they had been waiting for God’s special savior for a long time.  They knew that Jesus was going to be special and was going to change the world and all the people in it.  When we trust in Jesus, we enjoy being in His presence.  We enjoy praying and talking to Him and He makes us glad even when things aren’t going our way. Our joy is complete in Jesus; He will provide for us  when we trust in Him.

Questions:  What was the news that the angels said they had that would bring joy to all people? Why do you think it would make people joyful? How does Jesus make you joyful? Is there anything you need to ask Jesus for today?

Activity:  In the cereal box, cut out 3 letters: J-O-Y.  Let the child paint the three letters and then hole punch the top when dry.  String with ribbon and hang up on the tree. (It might be fun to write down some of the answers to your child’s questions on the back to read in the years ahead.)

Prayer:  Holy Lord, You are powerful and mighty, compassionate and loving.  Help us to be filled with Your joy and remind us of Your Son’s love at Christmas and all year long. Amen!
