Lesson Learned: Jesus is our shepherd and protects us.

Materials Needed: paper plate, black pom pom, glue, craftstick, scissors, white paper, marker

Bible Verse:
John 10:14-15
14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.

Psalm 23
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
 3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
   for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
   through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
   for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
   they comfort me.
 5 You prepare a table before me
   in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
   my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
   all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
   forever.

Talking Points:  A shepherd is someone who takes care of his sheep.  When a sheep wanders off or gets lost, the shepherd goes to find them and bring them back to the rest of the flock.  Shepherds feed the sheep and give them water.  They lead the sheep to their homes and keep them safe from wild animals like lions.  In the Bible, we learn that Jesus is our shepherd.  He gives us everything we need and protects us from evil.  Jesus is the greatest shepherd ever!

Questions:  What is a shepherd? Who is the greatest shepherd that ever lived?

Activity:
Little Lost Lamb
In the center of the paper plate, cut out two circles for eyes. Have the child glue on the pom pom nose and draw a mouth with the marker.  Cut out two ears out of the white paper and let the child glue them onto the paper plate.  Glue the craftstick to the back of the paper plate as a handle for the mask.

For additional play, pretend to be a shepherd and let the child hide and be the “lost sheep”.  Go find them and bring them back home.

Prayer:  Dear God, thank You so much for sending Jesus to be our shepherd and take care of us.  You are a kind and caring God. Thank You for loving me. Amen!
