Lesson Learned:  Jesus is the way to Heaven.

Materials Needed: chalk

Bible Verse:
Genesis 28:11-17
11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 There above it stood the LORD, and he said: “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”

John 14:6
I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Talking Points:  One of God’s followers, named Jacob, was very, very tired and needed to rest. In fact, he was so tired that he fell asleep with his head on a rock.  While he was sleeping, God gave him a dream about a stairway/ladder leading to heaven.  Jacob saw angels going up and down this ladder and he heard God say, “I am the Lord.  I will give you this land you are lying down on and all the peoples of the earth will be blessed through you.  I will watch over you wherever you go.”

Wouldn’t it be cool to be able to hop on a ladder and walk right up to God and ask Him our questions?  We know we can’t do that, but we can see God someday if we believe Jesus and live our lives for Him.  God sent His Son, Jesus, to us so that one day those who follow Him would be able to get to Heaven.  Jesus is the only way to get to the Father.

Questions:  After Jacob fell asleep on the rock, what did he dream about?  Can you climb a ladder to get to Heaven? How can you get to Heaven?

Activity:  After reading and discussing the story with the child, head outside with some chalk.  Help the child draw a ladder on the sidewalk.  Let the child pretend to climb the ladder on the ground.

Prayer:  Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Son to lead us to Heaven.  You promise to never leave those that seek Your name.  Lead us to You. Amen!
