I posted this one earlier but am reposting to fit in with the rest of our Genesis devotionals.

Lesson Learned: God gives families brothers and sisters.

Materials Needed: twelve clothes pins, string, push pins, marker

Bible Verse:
Genesis 35:22b-26

Jacob had twelve sons:
 23 The sons of Leah:
   Reuben the firstborn of Jacob,
Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.

 24 The sons of Rachel:
   Joseph and Benjamin.

25 The sons of Rachel’s servant Bilhah:
   Dan and Naphtali.

26 The sons of Leah’s servant Zilpah:
   Gad and Asher.

These were the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan Aram.

Talking Points:  Some families are big and small families are small. In this story, we read about a man who had 12 brothers! Some families have lots of brothers and sisters and some families have only one child and maybe only one parent.  God loves families of all sizes and He made your family very special. You may have lots of brothers and sisters or maybe you are special all by yourself.  God made each and every one of you.

Questions:
Do you have a brother/sister? How many?  What is her name? What do you like about him/her?  Have you told them you love them today?

Activity:  Draw the numbers “1 through 12” on 12 clothespins with a marker.   Hang up a piece of string between two walls with push pins.  Have the child hang up the clothespins in order on the string after you are done reading about Joseph’s 12 brothers.

Prayer:  Thank You, God, for giving me brother/sister.  I am so glad I have someone to play with and someone to laugh with and someone who can be my friend my whole life.
