Lesson Learned:  Mary was happy when she found out she would be Jesus’ mom.

Materials Needed:  red, white, and green construction paper, marker, scissors, glue

Bible Verse:
Luke 1:46-55
 46 And Mary said:
   “My soul glorifies the Lord
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
   holy is his name.
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him,
   from generation to generation.
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
   remembering to be merciful
55 to Abraham and his descendants forever,
just as he promised our ancestors.”

Talking Points: Mary was told by an angel that she would one day soon become Jesus’ mother.  She was probably very happy and excited to know that she would be Jesus’ mom.  Maybe she was a little nervous too.  After she hears the news, she sings a song to praise God to thank Him for honoring her with such a special job to do for Him.  Did you know God has a special job for each and every one of us?  He wants us to be His hands and feet and to tell the world about Him and His Son.   Just like Mary, we can be happy God has this special job for us.

Questions:   Why was Mary singing? What was she happy about?  Can you think of some people you’d like to share Jesus’ birthday story with today or this week?

Activity:
Handprint Wreath
Have the child trace his/her hands several times on both the red and green construction paper.  Cut out the handprints and then glue them in a circle on the white construction paper like a wreath.  Write the names of people you can share the Christmas story with on the handprints.

Prayer:   Heavenly Father, we are so excited to be celebrating Jesus’ birth this month.  Just like Mary, we want to praise and glorify You every day and do Your will.  Help us to know Your will for us today. Amen!
