Lesson Learned: We are children of God and we need to live this way so that all our friends and family can see our light (or hope, love, trust) that comes from living a life for God.
Materials Needed: dark colored blanket and a flashlight
Bible Verse John 1:4-5 and 1 John 1:5-7
4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
1 John 1:5-7
5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all[ sin.
Jesus came into the world to show us what it means to love God and to live a life that shows others that we love Him. We should be “light” to those around us. Light means loving others, following the commands God gives us in the Bible, and living lives that are different from those that don’t believe in Him.
Why do you turn lights on in the dark? Why is Jesus described as the light? How can you be a light to those around you?
Take a blanket and put it over the child’s head. It will be dark under the blanket. Now, shine a flashlight under the blanket (away from the child’s eyes). It is bright under the blanket. You can do this several times to demonstrate living in darkness vs. living in the light with Jesus. Things are more clear and easier to see when Jesus is in our lives.
After the blanket activity, you may choose to sing the song “This Little Light of Mine, I’m Going to Let it Shine.”
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your Son so that we could be lights to the world. Please guide our ways so that it is evident to everyone around us that you are the focus of our lives and the source of this light. Keep us from darkness and the lies of evil. In your name, we ask these things. Amen!
