Bible Story Hour: God Provides (Jesus Feeds the 5,000)

This week’s Bible Story Hour theme is God Provides for Us! Through songs, stories, and hands-on play, children will discover how Jesus showed God’s love by feeding thousands of people with just five loaves and two fish. It’s a fun and faith-filled way to help little ones learn that God always takes care of us!

Welcome Song: “Good Morning to You!”

We begin our story hour with a cheerful welcome song sung to the tune of Happy Birthday.

🎵
Good morning to you!
Good morning to you!
Good morning dear [child’s name],
We’re glad God made you!
🎵

If the group is small enough, each child gets to choose a fun action for everyone to do while singing their name. It’s a joyful way to start the day and remind children that they are wonderfully made by God.

Memory Verse

“Jesus gave thanks and gave the food to the people.”
— John 6:11

To help little ones remember, we add simple motions:

  • Point up to God
  • Fold hands in prayer
  • Pretend to eat
  • Point to people

These actions make memorizing scripture fun and engaging for preschoolers!

Bible Story: Jesus Feeds the 5,000

Next, we read the story of Jesus Feeds the 5,000 and talk about how Jesus shared food with a large crowd using just a small boy’s lunch. Children will learn that God can take something small and make it into something amazing!

Hands-On Sorting Activity:
After reading, we sort pictures or toy fish and loaves into different sizes—big, medium, and small. This helps reinforce counting, sorting skills, and the idea that God multiplies what we have.

Nursery Rhymes and Movement Fun

To keep the little ones moving and listening, we enjoy a few classic nursery rhymes that connect with our theme of food and sharing:

  • Hot Cross Buns
  • Little Miss Muffet
  • Fee Fi Fo Fum
  • Old Mother Hubbard

Each rhyme gives children a chance to listen, sing along, and act out parts of the story.

Activity: We also hide plastic food items around the room for a “Food Hunt”! Kids search for the hidden items, then we talk about how God provides food for everyone.

Snack Time and Sharing

After all that fun, we pause for a simple snack — graham crackers to share. As we eat, we remind children how Jesus shared food with others. Snack time becomes a sweet opportunity to practice thankfulness and kindness.

Prayer and Goodbye Song

Before heading home, we gather together for a short prayer, thanking God for providing everything we need. Then we end with an energetic Animal Action Goodbye Song — a fun way to move and giggle one last time before saying goodbye.

If there’s a little extra time left, we play “The Floor is Lava!” — a favorite game that adds excitement to the end of story hour.
