Lesson Learned: God separated the Jordan river so His people could get to the promised land.
Materials Needed: box (from yesterday), blanket
Bible Verse:
Joshua 3:14-17
14 So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them. 15 Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, 16 the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan, while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho. 17The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.
Talking Points: God had promised His people that one day they would go to a land that was very rich with food and very green. They had been in the desert for a very long time. There was one thing in there way though: a great big river that they couldn’t get across. God can do the impossible though so He told the priests to go the water’s edge, and as soon as they did, the water separated and the ground dried up. All the people were able to cross the Jordan River without even getting wet, and the priests got the Arc of the Covenant to the other side. God can always do what we can’t!
Questions: Why were the people trying to get across the river? What did God do so they could get across? What important item did they take with them?
Activity: Lay the blanket down on the ground. You’ll be pretending that the blanket is the Jordan River and you are going to cross over it, carrying the Ark, with the child. Hold one end of the box and have your child hold the other end. Prayer that God stop the water and then cross over the “Jordan”.
Prayer: Dear God, You can do the impossible! You stopped the waters of the Jordan River so Your people could carry the Ark across and the river bed was DRY. You do the impossible in our lives to and we pray that we live our lives for Your might ways. Amen!
